VitaliTIME: How Time Management contributes to your vitality.
We all have 24 hours in a day, but how we use that time differs from person to person. It's not about the hours themselves, but about we organise and prioritise them. Time Management helps you consciously divide those hours between work, relaxation and recovery. Often associated with to-do lists and productivity, in reality it goes much further: it's about spending your time on what truly matters - for both your work and wellbeing.
In this interview with Maureen we dive deeper into effective Time Management and how it contributes to your vitality.
What makes you an expert in Time Management?
Maureen: "Over the years I've had various roles. Many of these arose from our growth, which meant I got more taks and responsibilities as well. As a result, it became increasingly important for me to make the best possible use of my time.
Most of my expertise therefore comes from practice, but I also read, listen, and look for approaches that I can apply and (more importantly!) can sustain.
Books such as Getting things done by David Allen and The 5AM Club by Robin Sharma have given me a lot of insights into creating structure, prioritising tasks and scheduling focus moments."

What is your personal secret when it comes to Time Management?
Maureen: "Preparation and reflection! Before my working week begins, I take a moment to look at my priorities and describe in such a way that I immediately know what needs to be done. This way, I don't lose valuable time during focus moments wondering what to do and I have a clear overview of what I should be working during project work.
I plan my activities outside of work in the same way. In the mornings after preparing my work, I often go for a walk because I really enjoy spending some time outdoors. I believe exercising is really important as well, so I schedule those sessions in my agenda. I want to be sure it happens and that I don't get swept up by the busyness of the day.
At the end of the week I reflect: did I do what I had set out to do? Has everything been processed and have any new tasks come in? This is also the moment I reset my priorities and look at how I can plan my next week"
How do you determine what really matters in a day?
Maureen: "On an average working day it can feel as though everything is a priority, but of course not all tasks carry the same weight. By focusing on what truly adds value, I prevent myself from becoming overwhelmed and can channel my energy into the tasks that support my goals and my wellbeing.
To be able to get started quickly on what truly deserves my attention, I set my priorities for the following week at the end of each week. I do this using priorisation techniques such as the Eisenhower Matrix and the MoSCoW method."
In what way do you combine Energy Management with Time Management?
Maureen: "Energy Management and Time Management go hand in hand. By analysing my own energy patterns and natural rhythm, I can align my schedule with the times when I'm most alert and productive. Tasks that require concentration and creativity I plan during energy peaks, while I save less demanding activities for times when my energy is lower.
For example, I often schedule focus time straight after so-called 'dead' moments - either in the morning or right after lunch - so I don't have to interrupt my workflow in order to get into a focused block of work."

According to you, why are breaks and recovery so important?
Maureen: "Effective Time Management isn't just about getting more work done, but also about consciously taking time to recover. Short breaks or a walk outside help me to keep my concentration levels high, allowing me to be more productive than without any breaks.
One method I often recommend is the Pomodoro technique: 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break. This way, you can structure your recovery moments and prevent your energy from draining away."
