Interview with Martien: Business Development Intern at Booking Experts
At Booking Experts, interns get the chance to really join in and gain experience in a modern and dynamic environment. We believe it’s important that you not only learn, but also have the space to share your own ideas and take responsibility.
Martien, 23 years old and a Commercial Economics student, joined our Business Development Team for his internship. In this interview, he shares his experience and the highlights of his time with us.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us why you chose to do your internship with us?
“My name is Martien, I’m 23 years old and I’m from Spain. I study Commercial Economics at Tio University of Applied Sciences. In my second year I was looking for an internship where I could really learn about Sales and Business Development. Booking Experts immediately caught my attention because I find the combination of tech and hospitality very interesting. I also heard that there is an open and friendly atmosphere here, so it seemed like the perfect place to develop myself.”

Can you tell us more about your internship?
“During my internship over the past months, I gained a broad view of how sales and Business Development works at Booking Experts. I was able to explore markets such as Belgium and the Caribbean region. I also worked a lot with HubSpot. I also got the chance to contact potential customers myself through LinkedIn, email, and even by phone. What I really enjoyed is that I was not only doing operational work, but also got to think along with strategies, for example when analyzing competitors or lost deals. This made me feel like a real part of the team, and not just ‘an intern.’”
What was your first impression of Booking Experts?
“My first impression was very positive. Everyone came to introduce themselves right away, and there was a very open and energetic atmosphere. It felt professional, but also informal and friendly at the same time.”
How was the onboarding? Did you have a buddy and did you feel welcome right away?
“The onboarding was very well organized. I received clear explanations from the start and could get to work quickly. My buddy was Isabelle, and she always helped me with questions and gave me great tips. Because of that, I felt welcome from day one.”

What surprised you since you started here, something you didn’t expect?
“I didn’t expect to get so much responsibility. I thought I would mainly be observing, but I was allowed to take on tasks independently right away. That was a bit exciting, but also very fun and a great learning experience.”
Can you give a concrete example of a project or task that you are proud of?
“I’m proud of the analysis of lost deals that I created. I researched why some potential customers decided not to choose us and summarized this in a report with recommendations. The Business Development Team actually used my report, which gave me the feeling that I made a real contribution.”
Did you experience any fun events you’d like to share? “Definitely! The team lunches are always very nice. On top of that, I really enjoyed the Summer Roadtrip with the Benelux Team. We visited customers and prospects together, which was not only educational but also a lot of fun.”

How do you see your future inside or outside Booking Experts?
“First, I want to finish my studies, but this internship gave me a lot of clarity. I find sales and Business Development in the hospitality-tech sector really interesting.”
What would you say to other students who are looking for an internship? Why should they choose us?
“I would say: go for it! You get real responsibility here, great guidance, and you learn a lot. On top of that, you are part of a super fun team and you are not seen as ‘just an intern,’ but as a full team member.”
What do you like most about working here?
“Without a doubt: the people and the atmosphere. Everyone is there for you, and you really feel part of the team. The work is varied and challenging, but there is also always time for fun and social moments.”
Do you have one last tip or piece of advice for new interns who will start here soon?
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and take initiative. You learn the most here by actively participating and sharing your ideas.”
